These two different species,
Copsis quinquefolia and
Coptis japonica var. maor put
below, flowers both coming out very
early in the spring like spring
ephemerals that die back before
summer, but in fact they are not -
they have evergreen leaves.
I saw this C. quinquefolia
for the first time in eight years,
and was breathtakingly impressed
with the beauty of huge population
spread around just in front of me in
a cryptomeria forest.
