Carex pumila / Kouboushiba コウボウシバ

 

Carex pumila, a perennial herb found in sandy seashore soil, grows to 10-20cm tall. Its leaves are 2-4mm wide, linear, stiff, and glossy. Leaves at the bases are bladeless, forming dark red-brown leaf sheaths on the stems. Two or three spikelets on the upper portions are males, 2-3cm long, linear. The lower portions of the other 2-3 spikelets are females, 1.5-3cm long, and cylindrical. Bloom time is April-July.
