Carex stenostachys var. stenostachys is a perennial herb, 30-50cm in height, commonly occurs in fields and mountains and grows in crowds without making runners. Leaves are slender, and sheaths at the bases are dark purple-brown. Spikelets are 3-4 in number; top spikelets are male, and side spikelets are female, approximately 2cm long.
