Carex stenostachys var. stenostachys is a perennial herb, 30-50cm in height, commonly found in fields and mountains, and grows in dense clusters without producing runners. Leaves are slender, and sheaths at the bases are dark purple-brown. Spikelets are 3-4 in number; top spikelets are male, and side spikelets are female, approximately 2cm long. Bloom time: April-May.
