Cyperus brevifolius var. leiolepis, a perennial found in sunny, damp areas, grows to 5-20cm and propagates by extending long rhizomes. Leaves are 2-3mm broad and linear. Stem tips have 2-3 leaf-like bracts, generally bearing a single, occasionally 2-3, 0.7-1cm-diameter spherical inflorescence that includes small green spikelets. The spikelets are 2-3.5mm long, flat, narrowly lanceolate, with four scales, the uppermost one bearing florets.
