Edgeworthia chrysantha,
a deciduous shrub growing as tall as two meters, inhabits forests,
branching well to form hemispheric tree shapes. New branches emerge
in three, yellow-brown, with adpressed hairs. Leaves are alternate;
blades are 5-20cm in length, 2-5cm in width, long oblong or
lanceolate, tips acute, margins entire. Petioles measure 5-10mm in
size. In the capitulum on branch tips, 30-50 small flowers bloom
before leaves develop. The flowers are bisexual and petal-less -
calyxes are prominent. Calyx tubes measure 8-15mm long and tip cleft
in four. Inside, the sepals are vivid yellow, outsides being with
dense silky hairs. Bloom time: March-April. |
