Fagus crenata,
a deciduous tree found in high altitudes in mountainous regions,
grows to 30m in height and 1m in diameter, with gray-white, smooth
bark. Leaves are alternate, 4-9cm in length and 2-4cm in width, thin
and somewhat stiff, with undulate margins. Flowers bloom
simultaneously as the leaves develop; male inflorescences hang from
the axils on the lower parts of new branches, with 6-15 flowers
blooming in a bundle, while females appear from the axils on the
