Ilex
crenata is
a small- or tree found in craggy places, grasslands, or forest
edges, in mountainous regions, with gray-white barks, generally
growing to 2-6m, rarely 15m in height, 10-15cm in diameter, branches
luxuriantly to grow into masses of branches and leaves. Leaves are
alternate, 1-3cm long, 5-15mm wide, oblong or long-oblong, with some
shallow serrations on margins, and both sides hairy not. Flowers are
dioecious; leaf axes on the current year's branches give birth to
small green-white flowers. Male flowers appear 2-6 in number and
females 1 in umbels. Petals are 4, orbicular-ovate, approx. 2mm
long. Sepals 4. Drupes, 5-6mm, spherical, mature in black in
October-November. Bloom time: June-July. |
