Portulaca oleracea is a fleshy annual herb that occurs in sunny locations, with stems tingeing red-purple and crawling on the ground to spread. Leaves, 1-2.5cm long, are spatulate, with bases cuneate. Yellow flowers measure 6-8mm in diameter; bright light work as an opener, and vice versa. Petals are generally five and sepals two. Fruit rupture sideways as it ripens to disperse seeds. Bloom time: July-September.
