Smilax china is a deciduous semi-shrub liana inhabiting grasslands, inside or edges of forests, in fields, and mountains. Branches are with sparse thorns and twine around something, together with their tendrils, to extend. Leaves are alternate; blades measure 3-12cm long, are circular or elliptical, with short and pointed tips, circular bases, entire margins, leathery edges, and an obtusely glossy surface. Simultaneously with the development of the leaves, axils emerge, form umbels, and set many yellow-green flowers in them. Sap fruit, spherical, 7-9mm across, mature orange-red in October-November. Bloom time: April-May.
