Symplocarpus nipponicus
is a perennial with short rhizomes in damp forest edges or wetlands
in mountainous regions. Radical leaves, with long petioles, are
10-20cm in length, 7-12cm in width, in the shape of an ovate-like-
cordate or oblong. Inflorescences (spadices) emerge from the bases
of the plants and make themselves covered with dark purple-brown,
fleshy spathes (approximately 4 cm long, in the shape of something
like a canoe). Many small yellow-brown flowers bloom in the spadices
in the spathes. Bloom time: May-June. |
