Wasabia japonica,
a perennial plant that inhabits clear waters in valleys of
mountainous regions, grows to 20-40cm tall. Radical leaves have long
petioles. The blades measure 6-12cm in diameter, are orbicular, and
have cordate bases. They also have wavy serrations on their margins
and a glossy surface. These leaves pass the winter. Short racemes
give 4-petaled white flowers with leaf-like bracts at the small
grounds of peduncles. The petals are in the shape of an oblanceolate,
approximately 1cm across, with bases that resemble nails. Stamens
are 6 in number, and the anthers are yellow. Bloom time: March-May. |
