Wisteria floribunda,
a deciduous tree liana with gray-brown bark, is found on forest
edges or in bright forests, reaching the tree crown by coiling
itself around the tree. The phyllotaxis is alternate; the leaves
measure 20-30cm long, of an imparipinnate compound leaf with 5-9
pairs of leaflets; the leaflets are 4-10cm long, long-oblong or
narrow oval, and the margins are entire. 20-100cm long racemes droop
down from the branch tips, bearing many 1.5-2cm long, purple,
butterfly-like flowers. Fruit (legume), 10-20cm long, with dense,
velvety, short hairs. As they mature, they twist to split open in
two, becoming dry and shedding their seeds, which are about 1.2cm
across, flat, circular, brown, and glossy. Bloom time: May. |
