Ophiopogon japonicus var. umbrosus, a perennial found on forest floors in fields and mountains, does not produce runners, and its leaves are 30-40cm long. Inflorescences arise among the leaves, and white to light purple flowers bloom. Seeds are naked and mature in dark blue-purple in autumn.
