Ardisia japonica, a small evergreen shrub
found in mountain forests, grows to 10-20cm tall. Alternate
leaves put themselves three or four on the upper parts of
stems in a whorl way; blades are 4-13cm long, 2-5cm wide, in
the shape of a long oblong, with tips pointed, bases cuneate,
and delicate serrations on margins. Axils on previous year's
branches set some 5-8 mm across white flowers; corollas
divide themselves into five lobes, which are broad oval,
with glandular dots. Drupes measure 5-6mm in diameter and
are spherical, maturing to a red color in October and
November. Bloom time: July-August. |
