Ardisia japonica,
a small evergreen shrub inhabiting forests in mountainous
regions, grows to 10-20cm in height. Alternate leaves put
themselves three or four on the upper parts of stems in a
whorl way; blades are 4-13cm long, 2-5cm long, in the shape
of a long oblong, with tips pointed, bases cuneate, and
delicate serrations on margins. Axils on previous year's
branches set some 5-8mm-across white flowers; corollas
divide themselves in five - the lobes are broad oval, with
glandular dots. Drupes measure 5-6mm in diameter and are
spherical, mature red in October-November. Bloom time:
July-August. |
