Clematis japonica
is a climbing shrub that inhabits forest edges in fields and
mountains, characterized by its dark purple stems. Leaves are of
opposite phyllotaxis and a ternate compound leaf; leaflets measure
3-8cm in length, in an oval shape, with 3-5 prominent veins on the
surfaces and serrations on the upper part of the margins. Leaf axils
emerge with long peduncles, set single dark red-purple flowers, and
open facing downward. The flowers lack petals; their sepals, four in
number, are approximately 3cm long, with numerous white hairs on the
margins. Styles elongate and bear dense, long hairs. Bloom time:
May-June. |
