Clematis japonica
is a climbing shrub inhabiting forest edges in fields and mountains,
with dark purple stems. Leaves are of opposite phyllotaxis and a
ternate compound leaf; leaflets measure 3-8cm in length, in an oval
shape, with 3-5 prominent veins on surfaces and serrations on the
upper part of margins. Leaf axils emerge long peduncles, set single
dark red-purple flowers, and open facing downward. The flowers lack
petals; sepals, four in number, are about 3cm long, with many white
hairs on the margins. Styles elongate themselves long and bear
dense, long hairs on them. Bloom time: May-June. |
